The best time to visit Budapest is not when most blogs say it is. In 2025, October and December were both busier than July, so the “quiet shoulder season” is mostly a myth: Budapest is busy most of the year and properly quiet for two months. Below, every month is judged on HungaroMet’s official climate normals and the statistics office’s (KSH) guest figures, not guesswork.

When is the best time to visit Budapest?#
The best time to visit Budapest is May or September: warm days around 22.5 °C, sunset after 19:00 in mid-month, terraces and river boats running, and fewer visitors than in August or December. The right month depends on what you’re coming for.
| If you want… | Go in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Warm weather without the August peak | May, September | Highs of 22.6 / 22.5 °C, long days |
| The lowest prices and emptiest sights | January, February | The quietest months by far |
| Christmas markets | Late November to 23 December | Markets open mid-November |
| The most atmospheric baths | December to February | 36–38 °C water in freezing air |
| Festivals and nightlife | July, August | Sziget, F1, 20 August |
| Swimming at Lake Balaton | June to August | The lake’s beach season |
Verdict: pick May if you want spring green and the Spring Festival, September if you want warmer evenings and the wine festival, and January if you’d rather pay less and wear a hat.

Prices checked October 2026.
Weather: HungaroMet 1991–2020 normals for Budapest. Crowds: guest nights in Budapest’s commercial accommodation in 2025, from KSH table 27.2.1.19. *Rate levels are our reading of that demand data and the hotel association’s averages (below), not a monthly price list.
Two things stand out: January and February are about 40% quieter than August, and October 2025 (1.09 million guest nights) was busier than July (1.01 million), with December almost matching August.
On price, the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association (MSZÉSZ) puts the average Budapest room at 38,063 HUF (about €104) a night from January to April 2026, with occupancy at 62.8%. In July 2026 it was 47,072 HUF (about €129), with 77.7% of rooms full. That’s about 24% higher on average in summer. See our Budapest trip cost guide for full daily budgets.
Is spring a good time to visit Budapest?#
Spring is a good time to visit Budapest from mid-April (highs of 17.9 °C) and a very good one in May (22.6 °C). March is cool, at 11.3 °C by day, but cheap.
15 March is a national holiday, with free entry to St Stephen’s Hall, the Budapest History Museum and the upper level of Fisherman’s Bastion (see our Buda Castle guide). Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, and Easter Monday is a public holiday, so expect a busy long weekend. The clocks go forward the same day.
April brings the Budapest Spring Festival of concerts, theatre and exhibitions: in 2026, 29 April to 12 May at almost 30 venues, many free (budapestinfo.hu). The 2027 dates hadn’t been announced as of October 2026.
May is the sweet spot: warm enough for riverside terraces, and the Danube Bend boats are back on their timetable (in 2026, Mahart’s Szentendre boat started on 14 March). May is also the second-wettest month after July, at 67 mm, so pack a light jacket. Our day trips from Budapest guide covers which trips work in spring.
Is Budapest too hot or crowded in summer?#
Budapest in summer is hot and busy: July averages 28.1 °C by day and 16.7 °C at night, and August is almost identical. The crowds are the bigger problem. August 2025 was the busiest month of the year, and August 2026 was busier still, at 1.24 million guest nights (+6.3%, KSH).
Summer has the big events. Book your hotel early for these dates:
| Event | Date | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Night of Museums | 20 June in 2026 | Museums city-wide, open until late |
| F1 Hungarian Grand Prix | 30 July–1 August 2027 | Hungaroring, Mogyoród (formula1.com tickets) |
| Sziget Festival | 10–14 August 2027 (Tue–Sat) | Óbuda Island (szigetfestival.com) |
| St Stephen’s Day (20 August) | Friday 20 August 2027 | Danube embankments |
On 20 August 2026 the fireworks changed format: a roughly 30-minute show of projections on the Parliament and about 2,000 drones, then a 10-minute firework finale, smaller and cheaper than before. The 2027 plans hadn’t been announced as of October 2026, and 20 August 2027 is a Friday, so expect a full long weekend.
Summer is the season for Lake Balaton, late sunset cruises and Palatinus. One recent catch: in 2026 low water on the Danube suspended all of Mahart’s Danube Bend boats from 13 July to 11 October. Check the boat before you plan around it, or take the H5 HÉV to Szentendre instead.
Is autumn the best time to visit Budapest?#
Autumn is the best time to visit Budapest in September, a good one in October and the weakest in early November. September is as warm as May (22.5 °C) and drier, with 52 mm of rain.
September has the Budapest Wine Festival in the courtyards of Buda Castle. The 35th edition ran from 9 to 12 September 2026 and drew more than 29,000 visitors (aborfesztival.hu). The 2027 dates weren’t published as of October 2026.
October is mild (16.4 °C by day), colourful and, surprisingly, busy. 23 October is a national holiday, with the same free museum entries as 15 March. The clocks go back on 25 October 2026, and by the 31st the sun sets at 16:30. It’s also the last month for some seasonal trips: Lake Balaton’s scheduled BAHART boats end on 25 October 2026, and Eger’s Bikavér festival days run from 16 to 31 October 2026 (see our Eger day trip guide).
Early November is the gap month: 9.4 °C, grey, dark by half past four and no markets yet. Come in the second half instead.
Is Budapest worth visiting in winter?#
Budapest is worth visiting in winter for thermal baths, Christmas markets and the year’s lowest prices, if you can live with cold, short days. December averages 3.5 °C by day and −1.4 °C at night, and January, the coldest month, 3.0 °C and −2.5 °C.
December is two different months. The first half is market season without the holiday rush. From about the 18th until New Year it’s peak season: Széchenyi switches to its holiday schedule from 18 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, and December 2025 was nearly as busy as August. As of 1 October 2026, the 2026 dates had not been announced. In 2025 the main markets opened on 14 November, and the Basilica market ran until 1 January. Our Christmas markets guide will carry the 2026 dates as soon as they’re published.
New Year’s Eve is a street party, not a fireworks show. There was no official city display on 31 December 2025, and a city decree limits private fireworks. In 2025 all four metro lines ran all night.
January and February are the quietest and cheapest months. Plan around daylight: sunset is at 16:21 in mid-January. In February, the Busójárás carnival in Mohács, in southern Hungary, runs from 4 to 9 February 2027, with the main parade on Sunday 7 February (mohacs.hu).

Budapest: Unlimited Mulled Wine Cruise
An hour on the Danube with unlimited mulled wine, from Silverline’s Dock 11. In December it’s dark before 16:00, so even an afternoon sailing is a night cruise.
View Tour →What is the best time of year for Budapest’s thermal baths?#
The best time for Budapest’s thermal baths is winter, because Széchenyi’s outdoor pool stays at 36–38 °C all year, and the colder the air above it, the better it feels.
The time of day matters more than the month. Go on a weekday before 9:00 for Széchenyi’s Good Morning ticket (10,500 HUF, about €29, Monday to Thursday) and the emptiest pools. Avoid weekend afternoons in any season. If your dates or the forecast might change, a Széchenyi ticket with free cancellation is the safer buy; otherwise the ticket office is fine. See our Széchenyi ticket guide for every price and our comparison of the best thermal baths in Budapest for the alternatives.
In summer, swap the thermal halls for Palatinus on Margaret Island. Its outdoor pools are the summer option, and unlike Széchenyi and Rudas it admits children under 14.
When is the worst time to visit Budapest?#
The worst time to visit Budapest, for most people, is August: the busiest month, with highs of 28 °C, and Sziget, the Grand Prix and 20 August filling the hotels.
- Skip August if you dislike crowds, heat or high prices.
- Skip 18 December to New Year if you hate queues and peak prices. And note that Budapest shuts early on 24 December: in 2025 surface transport stopped by about 16:00 and the metro at 18:00.
- Skip January and February if you want long days outdoors, terraces or Danube Bend boats. You’ll get eight and a half to ten hours of daylight.
- Skip early November if you want festive atmosphere.
When should you book a Budapest hotel?#
Book as early as you can, ideally three months or more ahead, for the Grand Prix weekend, Sziget week, 20 August and any December weekend. Outside those dates there’s less pressure, especially in January and February.
For a December trip, stay in District V (Belváros-Lipótváros): the Basilica, Vörösmarty tér and City Hall Park markets are all within a short walk, which matters at −1 °C. In summer, a room with air conditioning matters more than the district. Our guide to where to stay in Budapest compares every area, and our list of things to do in Budapest shows what’s worth your days in any season.
