Two main squares, ten minutes apart, with better food than they need to have and a light show projected onto a basilica. The tricky part in 2026 is the calendar. The main market is changing hands, and most guides are quietly recycling last year’s dates.

The Budapest Christmas markets usually open in mid-November and run to the end of December, but the 2026 dates had not been officially announced as of 26 September 2026. Here’s what’s confirmed for 2025, and what we know about 2026:

Verdict: The safest window is 1–22 December. Every market ran on those dates in 2025, the Óbuda and Castle markets were open too, and you miss the Christmas Eve early closures.
Which is the best Christmas market in Budapest?#
The best Christmas market in Budapest is the Advent Feast at St Stephen’s Basilica, because of the free light show on the church’s facade every evening and the square’s setting. Vörösmarty tér is the older, bigger-name market, stronger on crafts. They’re about ten minutes’ walk apart, so you don’t really have to choose.

Verdict: Start at Vörösmarty tér around 16:30, walk up to the Basilica for the 17:30 light show, and eat there. Save the smaller Castle District market for a daytime visit when you’re up on Castle Hill anyway.
What time is the light show at St Stephen’s Basilica?#
The light show at St Stephen’s Basilica ran every afternoon and evening from 17:30 during the 2025 Advent Feast, projected across the church’s facade and repeated through the evening. It’s free, and it’s the single best reason to visit the markets after dark.
Sunset in December is around 15:50, so it’s fully dark by the first show. Stand near the fountain end of the square, facing the church, for the full facade. The Basilica also hosts evening concerts through the season:

Food and drinks at the Budapest Christmas markets cost roughly double a normal Budapest snack bar, but they’re still cheaper than most Western European markets. Hungarian press reports put the 2025 prices at:

Payment: in recent years the Vörösmarty tér food stalls have been cashless, taking cards only. Carry a card and a little cash for the smaller markets.
What else is there to do in Budapest at Christmas?#
Beyond the two main markets, Budapest’s Advent season has a few more reasons to wrap up:
- Ice skating: the City Park Ice Rink (Városligeti Műjégpálya) opened on 24 November in the 2025/26 season, with adult tickets from 3,500 HUF (about €10) off-peak and 4,500 HUF at peak times, plus skate rental. The City Hall Park market had its own rink too.
- Light trams: each Advent, BKV runs trams covered in fairy lights (fényvillamos) on regular routes, at normal fares. In 2025 they started on 28 November and ran until 6 January, including on the Nagykörút lines 4/6. Line 2 along the Danube is the one to catch if it’s on the list again.
- A river cruise: the Danube is even better in the cold, and the boats have heated decks. Silverline runs an unlimited mulled wine cruise:

Probably not. The markets are compact, free to enter and easy to navigate. On 24 December, plan to be back at your hotel by late afternoon, or book a restaurant that’s open that evening. Christmas Eve is a family night in Hungary, and the city goes quiet fast.
Practical tips for the Budapest Christmas markets#
- Weather: December in Budapest averages a high of 3.5 °C and a low of −1.4 °C (HungaroMet, 1991–2020 averages). It gets dark before 16:00. Wear proper shoes: the squares get icy.
- Crowds: weekday evenings are busy, and Friday and Saturday evenings are packed. For a calmer visit, go at opening time, eat early and come back for the light show.
- Pickpockets: Budapest police step up patrols at the markets every year. Their advice is not to keep phones or wallets in easy-to-reach pockets or on top of a bag, and to pay digitally where you can.

Where to stay for the Christmas markets#
Stay in District V (Belváros-Lipótváros). Both main markets are there, it’s walkable to the river, and you’ll be a short, warm walk from your bed after the last mulled wine. Who should skip the Budapest Christmas markets?#
If you’ve done the big German or Austrian markets and want the same scale, you’ll find Budapest’s pleasant but small. You can see both main markets properly in an evening. Travellers who hate crowds should skip Friday and Saturday nights entirely. Anyone arriving on 24 December should know the markets close by mid-afternoon.
