A Budapest river cruise is the one tourist activity locals don’t sneer at. The Danube really is the best seat in the city, and the stretch between Margaret Island and Liberty Bridge puts the Parliament, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge in one frame. What’s harder is choosing between day, night, prosecco and dinner, and knowing what 2026 has changed.

A one-hour Budapest river cruise costs from about €11 on the big paddle steamers to €25 with Legenda. Prosecco cruises cost €21–33 and dinner cruises €67–110 per person. BKV’s tourist boat is 3,000 HUF (about €8) for a daytime day ticket. Here’s how the formats compare:

Two things in that table surprise people. The cheapest evening cruise with thousands of good reviews costs just €11, and Legenda’s GetYourGuide listings cost the same as booking direct. And for prosecco cruises, the reseller is often cheaper: Silverline’s own site starts at €27, while its GetYourGuide listing started at €21 when we checked. Compare both for your date.
Is a day or night cruise better in Budapest?#
A night cruise is better for most first-time visitors, because the lit-up riverfront is what you came to see. A day cruise is better for photos, young children and following the commentary. The smartest option is a departure 15–30 minutes before sunset, so you get both halves on one ticket.
Sunset in Budapest moves by more than four hours across the year, so the “sunset cruise” is a different booking in every season:

Verdict: Book the evening. In July that means a late departure, and in January it means you’ll be back on land before most people have thought about dinner. If you’re travelling with small children, the day cruise with a Margaret Island stop (when the water level allows it) is the calmer choice.
When do the Parliament lights come on?#
Under Budapest’s lighting rules, landmark lighting comes on at dusk and switches off at 23:00 in summer time and 22:00 in winter time. So the ideal night cruise leaves between sunset and about an hour before switch-off. A 21:30 departure in December sails past a dark city.
Even with the Parliament dark, the lit bridges and embankments make an evening cruise worth it. It just stops being the postcard shot.
Which evening cruise should you book?#
For most people, book the unlimited-prosecco cruise. It costs about the same as Legenda’s plain evening cruise, runs a little longer, and you won’t need a bar afterwards. If you don’t drink, or you’re bringing children, pick a one-drink sightseeing cruise instead. The paddle steamer below is the cheapest well-reviewed one.

Is a Budapest dinner cruise worth it?#
A Budapest dinner cruise is worth it if you want a long, relaxed evening on the water and don’t expect restaurant-quality food. It isn’t worth it if the view is the point: a one-hour evening cruise shows you the same riverfront for about a quarter of the price, and you can eat better on land afterwards.

Verdict: Choose the River Diva buffet if you’d drink more than two glasses anyway. Choose the folk show if you want Hungarian music and dancing on your one evening. Skip dinner cruises altogether if you’re on a budget: an €11 evening cruise followed by dinner in the Jewish Quarter is a better night.
Is there a cheap public boat in Budapest?#
Yes, but not the one older guides describe. The BKK commuter boats (D11 and D12) have been suspended since 2020, and BKK’s only remaining boat line is a ferry in the far south of the city. What replaced them is BKV’s tourist boat, a hop-on hop-off loop with a live guide.
According to BKV’s summer 2026 timetable:
- Route: Kossuth Lajos tér (by the Parliament) – Margaret Island – Batthyány tér – Várkert Bazár – Petőfi tér – back to Kossuth Lajos tér, about an hour for the full loop.
- Price: 3,000 HUF (about €8) for adults and 1,700 HUF for children aged 3–14. It’s a day ticket, so you can get on and off.
- Departures: afternoons only on weekdays (14:15 to 17:15), with extra late-morning boats on Fridays, weekends and holidays.
- The catch: it’s a daytime service, the season and timetable change, and in 2026’s low water it skipped the Margaret Island stop. Check BKV’s boat page before you go.
The Budapest Card includes a free daytime cruise with partner operators, Legenda’s Duna Bella among them. That’s worth about €20, so count it if you’re weighing up whether the Budapest Card is worth it.
Where do Budapest river cruises leave from?#
Most Budapest river cruises leave from the Pest embankment between the Chain Bridge and Elisabeth Bridge. That’s the docks along Jane Haining rakpart and Vigadó tér, a five-minute walk from Vörösmarty tér (M1). The main ones:
- Legenda: Dock 7, Jane Haining rakpart
- Duna Cruises (paddle steamers): Dock 10, Jane Haining rakpart
- Silverline: Dock 11, Jane Haining rakpart
- Mahart PassNave: Vigadó tér (its prosecco cruise leaves from Batthyány tér, on the Buda side)

Arrive 15–30 minutes early; boarding closes on time and the docks look alike after dark. The Chain Bridge, which reopened in 2023 after renovation, is closed to private cars but open to pedestrians. That makes it an easy walk from the Buda side.
Do Budapest river cruises run in winter?#
Yes. Legenda sails all year, and dinner cruises run through winter, with special Christmas and New Year’s Eve sailings. Some seasonal products stop in autumn: Mahart’s By Night cruise runs only until 27 September in 2026, and its prosecco cruise until 1 November.
The Danube itself is the bigger risk. In September 2024, floods cancelled cruises for about a week. In summer 2026, record low water suspended Mahart’s Danube Bend boats and made most operators skip Margaret Island. A cruise ticket with free cancellation is worth having for exactly this reason.

Who should skip a Budapest river cruise?#
Travellers on a tight budget can get most of the view free by walking the Pest embankment from the Parliament to the Chain Bridge at dusk, or by crossing the Chain Bridge on foot. Tram 2 along the same stretch is a cheap substitute. Anyone prone to seasickness can relax: the river is flat, and the cruise is gentler than the tram.
