Verdict: go to Balatonfüred and Tihany. They’re the closest attractive stretch of shore, the train is direct, and the abbey, the promenade and the view all work in any season.
How do you get from Budapest to Lake Balaton by train?#
Trains to Lake Balaton leave from Budapest-Déli (M2) and stop at Kelenföld (M4) six minutes later. North-shore trains to Balatonfüred and Badacsony run every two hours; south-shore trains to Siófok and Keszthely run hourly (MÁV Balaton winter timetable).

Tickets and reservations: the Balatonfüred fast trains need no reservation. The Siófok and Keszthely InterCitys have IC coaches that need a seat reservation (990 HUF on the day, 650 HUF in advance), but in the winter timetable their non-IC coaches can be used without one. A same-day return to Balatonfüred costs about 5,040 HUF, so the nationwide Magyarország24 day ticket (4,999 HUF) is slightly cheaper and covers the buses too.
How do you do Balatonfüred and Tihany in one day?#
Take the 7:05 from Déli to Balatonfüred, bus 7355 to Tihany for the morning, and come back to Füred for the promenade in the afternoon. That gives you about eight hours at the lake with the 17:02 or 19:02 train home.
Getting to Tihany: Volánbusz line 7355 runs a loop from Balatonfüred bus station around the Tihany peninsula, and the Abbey stop is about 12 minutes away going one way round (about 35 minutes the other way, via the harbour). Buses run roughly every one to two hours outside summer, so note the return times when you arrive (7355 timetable). On weekends until 25 October 2026, BAHART boats also sail from Balatonfüred to Tihany at 9:30, 11:10, 12:40 and 16:10 for 2,150 HUF.
What is there to see in Tihany?#
Tihany is a peninsula of old volcanic hills that almost cuts the lake in half, with a village of thatched houses and the Benedictine Abbey on its highest point. The abbey was founded in 1055, and its charter is one of the oldest surviving texts containing Hungarian words. The church you see is baroque.

After the abbey, walk to the Echo Hill (Visszhang-domb), where words shouted towards the abbey’s north wall, about 300 m away, come back to you. On a calm day it still works, and on a windy day you’ll just look odd. Beyond the village is the Inner Lake (Belső-tó), a small lake in an old crater 26 m above Balaton, and the Hermits’ Caves (Barátlakások), cells cut into the rock by monks (tihany.hu).
Tihany is famous for lavender, which flowers in June. The village celebrated “100 years of Tihany lavender” in 2026 with events on 20–21 and 26–28 June. Outside June you’ll still find lavender soap and syrup in every shop.
What is there to do in Balatonfüred?#
Balatonfüred is the lake’s oldest resort, a spa town with 19th-century villas and a long lakeside promenade. The Tagore sétány is named after Rabindranath Tagore, who was treated at the town’s heart hospital in 1926 and planted a tree here (turizmus.balatonfured.hu). The square behind it, Gyógy tér, has the Kossuth spring pump room and the Anna Grand Hotel.
For wine, the Figula winery runs a walk-in tasting on Saturdays at 16:00 (six wines 6,600 HUF, eight wines 8,800 HUF; figula.hu). Leave from there for the 19:02 train.
Is Siófok worth a day trip?#
Only in summer. Siófok, on the south shore, is the closest Balaton resort to Budapest, 1 hour 20 minutes by hourly train, and it’s the party town: beaches, bars and the busy Petőfi sétány. From October to May it has little to see. If you’re there on an October weekend, you can cross to Balatonfüred or Tihany by boat (zone II, 2,400 HUF, about an hour) until 25 October 2026 and make a loop of it.
Can you visit Keszthely and Hévíz in a day?#
Yes, but it’s the longest of the options: plan on about two and a half hours each way. The easy way to Hévíz is the direct Volánbusz from Népliget: the 8:00 arrives at Hévíz bus station at 10:25, and buses back leave at 14:10 (arrives 16:35) and 17:35 (arrives 20:00) (Volánbusz Zala timetable). That’s a long day for a swim, so an overnight is better if you can.
Hévíz is the reason to go west. It’s a thermal lake with water at 35–38 °C in summer and never below 22 °C in winter, so you can swim in it all year (spaheviz.hu). The lake bath recommends soaking for 20–30 minutes at a time.

Is Badacsony worth it for wine?#
Badacsony is the lake’s best-known wine district: a flat-topped volcanic hill above the north shore, planted with vines. The 7:05 from Déli continues past Balatonfüred and reaches Badacsony at 10:03 (about 3,130 HUF), which makes it a long day, and the line is replaced by buses on 12–15 October 2026.
Tastings are cheap. Laposa Borterasz is open all year and pours a three-wine “Badacsony classics” flight for 2,990 HUF (laposaborterasz.hu). The Pátzay Estate tasting in Badacsonytomaj (from €14 for six wines with a cold platter, 4.0 from 20 reviews) can be booked ahead. If you want wine without the long train, Eger is under two hours away and has far more cellars.
When is the best time for a Lake Balaton day trip?#
The best time for a Lake Balaton day trip is June to early September, when the water is warm, the boats run daily and every lakeside restaurant is open. October is still good for Tihany and wine, with fewer people. From November to March the lake is quiet, and Hévíz is the reason to go.

The ferry: the Szántód–Tihanyrév car ferry is the only boat that runs all year, stopping only for extreme weather or ice. Adult foot passengers pay 1,000 HUF; from 2 November it sails hourly on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends (bahart.hu). In autumn, Club Tihany runs a pumpkin festival from 23 October to 1 November 2026.

Should you take a Lake Balaton tour from Budapest?#
A tour makes sense if you want Tihany without working out the bus, or you want to add a second area in the same day, which public transport can’t do. For Balatonfüred on its own, the train is simpler: about 5,000 HUF (€14) return against €119 or more for a tour. The best-reviewed group option combines the lake with the Danube Bend:

Should you stay overnight at Lake Balaton?#
Stay a night if you want Hévíz, Badacsony or a summer evening by the water: the last direct train from Balatonfüred leaves at 19:02, just as the promenade gets pleasant. These hotels are open and easy to book:
- Balatonfüred: Anna Grand Hotel (5-star, Gyógy tér 1), open all year, on the square behind the promenade. Or see all hotels in Balatonfüred.
- Tihany: Hotel Club Tihany, a lakeside resort by the ferry port. It’s mainly a summer-season resort, so check winter dates. Or see all stays in Tihany.

Who should skip Lake Balaton?#
Skip Lake Balaton from November to March unless you’re going for Hévíz: the lakeside is shuttered, and Eger or Vienna is a better day out. Skip it on a short first trip to Budapest, too, because the city’s own baths and the Danube Bend are closer. And if you want a beach day in October, you’ll be disappointed: the water was 17–18 °C at the end of September 2026. If it’s wine you’re after, Eger does it better; if you want another capital, try a Vienna day trip.

Can you swim in Lake Balaton in October?#
Only if you like cold water. On 30 September 2026 HungaroMet measured 17 to 18 degrees at Siófok and Tihany, and the beach season is over. For a warm swim in autumn or winter, go to the thermal lake at Hévíz, which is 35 to 38 degrees in summer and never below 22 degrees in winter.

Is Lake Balaton worth visiting in winter?#
The lakeside itself is quiet from November to March: boats stop, beaches close and many restaurants shut. Tihany Abbey stays open with shorter hours, and Hévíz’s thermal lake is at its best in the cold. In winter, go for Tihany and Hévíz rather than a beach day.
